Implications of a Second Lower High for NYSE TICK

By on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 2:54 pm

NYSE TICK currently set to post its second consecutive session with lower highs, noteworthy considering S&P futures have posted a second higher high and are working on a second higher close. Historically, when S&P futures post two days with a higher high and higher close and the NYSE TICK posts two lower highs, it’s a bullish indication looking out 2-3 trading days. It seems the ability of the market to rally without a significant amount of institutional participation usually translates into further upside. The last thirty occurrences are listed below…

S&P Futures Higher High & Close, NYSE TICK Lower High

01/05/06… Higher S&P close two sessions later
11/03/05… Higher S&P close two sessions later
08/03/05… No higher close 2-3 sessions later

Note that in each of the last 22 occurrences, and in 27 out of the last 30 occurrences (90%) stretching back nearly five years, the S&P posted a subsequently higher close (above the setup day’s close) 2-3 trading days later, significantly above the 66% random chance for a higher S&P 2-3 sessions later in the same time frame. This signal will go into effect as long as the NYSE TICK holds below yesterday’s intraday high of +1288 and June S&Ps settle above yesterday’s close of 1096.70.
