Why a Gap Up Open on Wednesday Would Represent a Sell

With S&P futures closing less than a point off the highs, we should be on alert for a gap up open (above SPM 1155.70) on Wednesday as it would most likely represent a short-term selling opportunity. In the table below is a summary of all 28 instances since 1990 in which S&P futures opened above the previous day’s high immediately following a Fed day. Note that the gap open usually proved to be a short-term sell. In each of the last 21 occurrences, and in 25 out of 28 occurrences since 1990, S&P futures settled below the opening price either the same day or within the next couple of days. That’s significantly greater than the 67% random chance for a settlement below today’s open within the next two days…
